Image

A massive Separatist force led by General Grievous has swept into the heart of the Republic, catching Coruscant completely by surprise!

Image

But the Grand Army of the Republic held strong...

Image

And repelled the attack, driving the Separatist into retreat.

Image

In a stunning turn, Separatist leader Count Dooku was killed!

Image

But with the escape of General Grievous, the war continues...

Image

And the future of the galaxy hangs in the balance.

Image

As the Separatist leadership attempts to regroup, the small planet Braatos VII has become the focal point of an effort to locate a powerful Jedi who has turned against the Republic.

Image

Down on the surface a strict curfew has been placed on the city of Unitos...

Image

While Republic clone troopers continue to search the city for Kala Mly Shundi.

Image

Meanwhile, in an effort to find Kala before the clones do, Jedi Masters Bassius and Redwind have met an unexpected challenge...

Image

A group of Dark Jedi!

Image

"Greetings, my friends," Bassius says carefully while assessing the situation.
"We are here to speak with Kala. May we see him?"

Image

"Don't play games with us, Old Man," the female leader of the group hisses.

Image

"You should leave this planet," another Dark Jedi warns them.

Image

"Kala has twisted their minds," Bassius whispers to Redwind as the pair keep a close watch on the renegades.
"They were once Padawans, their Masters have all been killed in the war... be ready for anything."

Image

"Our Master has seen the future," the woman says.
"A member of the Council will thrust the galaxy into darkness."

Image

"Attia, I know you have suffered much in this war," Bassius says with empathy.
"And so has Kala. So much that his vision is clouded... you must remember that the future is always in motion."

Image

"We will lose everything," Attia shouts.
"The Sith have the Council by its throat but they are too foolish to realize!"

Image

"They were sent here by the Council, and are as blind as the Council," another Dark Jedi adds as his lightsaber snaps to life.

Image

"And here I thought this mission would be unpleasant," Redwind says sarcastically as the two Jedi prepare to defend themselves.

Image

"This is your last chance," Attia says, as the sabers of her other comrades ignite.
"Leave now. And take your clones with you."

Image

"We will do no such thing," Bassius counters firmly.
"Stand down or we will be forced to take whatever steps we deem necessary to protect the interests of the Republic."

Image

The Jedi quickly find themselves surrounded!

Image

"You don't have to do this," Bassius shouts as he parries the first attack.
"Kala has deceived you!"

Image

Redwind stands his ground as the masked Jedi, igorning Bassius, moves forward, brandishing his dual blades menacingly.

Image

"Stop," Bassius pleads.
"We are NOT your enemies!"

Image

"You were warned!" the Ishi Tib says as a deadly stream of Force lightning leaps from his fingertips!

Image

Spinning to face this new attacker, Redwind barely manages to block the bolt of dark energy!

Image

"You're not leaving us many options," Redwind growls as his saber absorbs the attack.

Image

"You were all such promising students," Bassius laments as two of the renegades close in on him.

Image

"We have been shown things you can not imagine," Attia tells him.
"We must stop the traitor in the Jedi Council!"

Image

"The only traitors are you," Redwind says as he thrusts his lightsaber through the chest of the Ishi Tib!

Image

"Redwind!" Bassius shouts as he deftly blocks another attack, "We want to take them alive!"

Image

"They're too dangerous to be left alive," Redwind counters as he squares off against his remaining opponent.

Image

"What they're trying to do will bring down the Jedi Order!" Redwind shouts.

Image

"It is Kala who is against the Council, not them!" Bassius says.

Image

In an attempt to curb his anger, Redwind backs away from the masked Jedi...

Image

In doing so he begins to turn...

Image

And realizes Attia has abandoned the fight against Bassius in favor of attacking him!

Image

Enraged, Redwind calls on the Force...

Image

And pulls Attia's lightsaber from her grasp!

Image

Before she realizes what has happened the weapon is out of her reach...

Image

She watches in horror as the lightsaber tears into the body of her comrade!

Image

Finally coming to terms that there is no use reasoning with these Dark Jedi, Bassius quickly eliminates the other warrior.

Image

Bassius then turns to face Attia.

Image

To his surprise, she is standing next to another Dark Jedi, and none other than Kala Mly Shundi!

Image

Bassius and Redwind then raise their sabers in anticipation of the duel to come.

Image

Far across the galaxy, a lone Republic cruiser has just exited hyperspace.

Image

Inside, Commander Rykrof Enloe meets with his strike team in preparation for an assault on the Badoo Corba fortress on Dantooine.

Image

"What about the droids our scanners picked up?" Commando Drake asks as he studies the schematics of Rykrof's plan.
"Why would Seps be at this terrorist hideout?"

Image

"They had a rendezvous with the Badoo Corba for a prisoner exchange not long ago," Rykrof says.
"But why they still have a force there is unknown at this time."

Image

"With Count Dooku dead, the Trade Federation may be doing what they can to realign their partnership with terrorist organizations," Admiral Tylin Gere points out.

Image

"Just more clankers to turn into liquid metal," Racker says.

Image

"Intelligence suggests the Badoo Corba are holed up deep under the planet's surface," Admiral Tylin Gere adds.
"Getting in won't be easy."

Image

"That's not all. If the cruiser is detected the Badoo Corba will be alerted to the attack," Rykrof then advises the others.
"Once we reach the surface, we're on our own."

Image

"I still think a precision bombing makes more sense," Commando Drake says while shaking his head.
"Our orders are to eliminate the Badoo Corba leadership; why in the hell should we risk a ground team that could get cut to pieces?"

Image

"Because," Jedi Master Teltuu Stabo points out, "There's the potential for vital information to be lost in a bombing."

Image

"The Badoo Corba network strings across dozens of systems," he continues.
"If the complex is destroyed, we risk the chance of losing data that could reveal their contacts and sympathizers."

Image

"Plus, there's a prisoner we'd like to get out of there unscathed," Rykrof points out.

Image

"I know Freelo is your friend," Tylin interjects.
"But make no mistake Rykrof, your primary objective is to locate Mubaas Fuuda. We don't leave until he is in our custody - dead or alive."

Image

"All the others are to be killed on sight, regardless of the circumstances. Take no prisoners other than Mubaas."

Image

"Good. About time we wipe those slugs out," Racker says.

Image

Tylin then looks to Teltuu Stabo.

"You're being rather silent, Master Jedi. I trust you will not stand in the way of the Chancellor's direction in this matter?"

Image

"I am not one to question the threat the Badoo Corba still pose." the Jedi says.
"However I will take no part in the killing of prisoners."

Image

"You're not expected to," Rykrof tells him.

Image

"My men are prepared to carry out this order."

Image

Meanwhile back on Braatos VII...

Image

A group of Republic clone troopers have been alerted to a disturbance in the residential district of Unitos.

Image

To their surprise they find Redwind standing over the bodies of several slain Jedi!

Image

"Sir, what happened?" the lead officer asks.

Image

"It's Kala... he's here," Redwind says.

Image

"These Jedi... all traitors to the Republic," he says with regret.

Image

"Where is Master Bassius?" the trooper asks.

Image

"Inside... he went after Kala," Redwind tells the group.
"Contact your men and form a perimeter, I want all entrances to this building locked down!"

Image

"If Kala gets out, shoot him on sight."

Image

That's it... hope you guys enjoyed it... going to get cranking on Chapter 30 before too long.

Also, special thanks to Lance Quazar who proof read this before I posted it, and offered some suggestions that were helpful. He's a much better writer than I am!

That was a very exciting chapter! Loved it!

The beginning recap of the battle over Coruscant was well done and also not over done.

But of course, the main attraction for this chapter is the big fight there! I love how they're circling one another before engaging, and how Redwind and Bassius don't want to kill the fallen Jedi but find they have no other choice. I had to think about who the heck they were talking about being a council member who would betray them all but then d'uh, I remembered heh. I had forgotten that golden boy was put on the council.

The choreography of the fight itself is brilliant too, a lot of variety. It's not just slash-slash-stab, no, it's all variety of actions. I think the figure poses and photo angles you capture for these close-up scenes are really fantastic, I'd even go so far as to say you're the BEST at it!

And then I also loved the briefing on board the republic ship, very cool, you can really see the tone of the military dictatorship really starting to take hold, with even the Jedi expected to be a hindrance but yet he let's it go. Very subtle, very nicely done.

When the scene came back to Braatos and Redwind was standing there like that I was expecting him to say that Brassius had been killed and that Kala got away, but your scenario is much much better, it's a cliffhanger for the next chapter! A lot to look forward to: the ordered annihilation of the Badoo Corba AND this continued pursuit! And I want to see Freelo!! Please make it so he's alive and well ;-)

that was an outstanding chapter chewie! :)

-the summary of the attack on courascant was great, i really like the scene you did of anakin slaying dooku, spot on to the movie, great work.

-your braatos scenes look great. the back drops and dio set ups have alot of drab earthy tones and it really works well, as does the hue and saturation of the pictures....and that custom land speeder looks abosolutley sick in the 2nd shot.

-the stair case were the fallen jedi are standing looks amazing and the group looks very menacing. one question i had is are all of these fallen jedi supposed to be padawans?

-the shot when they all ignite thier lightsabers is outstanding, as is the shot of bassius and redwind igniting thier sabers, all the colors look great, you definetley have a great skill with lightsaber effects that is for sure.

-i really enjoy the fact that redwind is quick to take down the fallen jedi with his lightsaber rather than take them alive, echoing the sentiments of mace windu from rots that they were to dangerous to be left alive, while bassius is more the diplomat....good way of showing the conflicting opinions of the jedi during the clone wars.

-i have a hard time viewing these dissident jedi as dark jedi since they are correct follow kala and his premonition of a member of the council destroying and betraying them. i supose techniquely the are going against the jedi so they are dark jedi, but i found myself rooting for them during the fight......

-the operations order on the republic cruiser was interesting. it seems that rykroff and his troopers have effectivley been turned into a death squad to move against the badoo corba. the duros jedi is quite a "what ever it takes to acomplish the mission" sort of jedi as well, allowing his troopers to go suicide bomber in the last chapter and not giving any objection to the extermination of pow's, just not participating....im sure he wont last much longer with o66 comig but i like him. rykroff is becoming more and more agressive in his thought process and tactics as well, im very curious to see how he reacts to o66.....

- i have to say that i was very disapointed when we jumped back to braatos and redwind was standing over the utapauan jedi, he loked a bit more formidable in his armor and i was under the impression that he would be more of a fight than the others since he accompanied kala, i know it was just more lightsaber play, but what made you decide to skip a fight scene there?

-i do like that niether bassius or redwind were killed, i can only assume that bassius chased after kala and the female fallen jedi and im looking forward to the outcome of that conflict as am i looking forward to seeing what happens with this tory arc after o66, if kala is proven right and bassius and redwind are still alive with him in custody....that is a story in it's own...

again amazing chapter, anxiously awaiting the next and o66........ :D

Awesome, awesome chapter! The lightsaber duel was everything I was looking forward to and you did such an excellent job with that scene. It was really interesting to see Bassius and Redwind's conflicting views, and it will be just as interesting to see which way of going about things allows which Jedi to last longer. They're such great characters, I hope at least one of them makes it past Order 66 but I really don't have a preference. I'm working on scripts for my upcoming photonovel as we speak, and coming up with unique Jedi characters has been a challenge but you've certainly pulled it off here. Super enjoyable characters, just awesome and so well written (I guess some credit goes to Lance as well, so great job with the editing!). As for the Rykrof storyline, the most interesting thing will be to see what happens to Freelo. I hope you find a way to keep him alive, but I actually can't really see it happening in this current dark setting. Cool to see Rykrof and Tylin together again, and you picked a great time to reunite them with Order 66 approaching. I wouldn't be surprised if Tylin is the one who executes Order 66 and kills the Duros Jedi before Rykrof's eyes.

Such neat stuff, it really looks like you've set everything up to make Chapter 30 the action-packed, plot resolving, question answering (and provoking) chapter we've all been waiting for!!!! Just don't disappoint us! JK, you won't. You've done such an amazing job at setting up the next several (hopefully several) chapters; and I know with the consistent awesomeness of this series in its long existence, whatever you do will be, well, I have to make up an adjective since no existing one is fit to describe how cool this photonovel is....RYKROFLUESCENT. Whatever you do next will be rykrofluescent. :D

Very exciting part, Chewie! I feared for Bassius' life in the end and for Redwind's sanity! The recap in is a great start, mixing movie stills with your own shots in a very nice way.

Loved those lightsaber fights with the Dark Jedi and the meeting of Rykrof and his men, addressing the situation.

A great set up for chapter 30! :)

Total and utter quality from beginning to end...

Funnily enough my best picture was one in the Republic Cruiser with the text "My men are prepared to carry out this order." below. I also loved the image with the custom speeder.

Your sets, customs, & images are all candy to the eye and the writing is superb. I loved this chapter as I have all of the others I've read.

No, no, no, no no.....

As much as I wish I could take ANY credit for participating in this extraordinary achievement, this series has always been and remains 150% a Chewie production.

OK, once again an awesome addition to your photonovel. I absolutely love your Redwind custom. He has sort of a Daniel Craig to him. What head did you use. I also love the other Jedi customs; the mix of parts and paint jobs are just spot on. Also, one thing I like about your photonovel that separates it from other non-comic style (like yours) is that even though your text appears below the pictures, you do not over load us with text. There are honestly some photonovel where the text below the pics is just too much. The pictures should tell the story, and the text just moves us from panel to panel.

Now a few critiques:

1. The photos in this chapter just didn't seem as clear to me as those in the recent past. They reminded me of some of your first work. Don't know if this was intential or what; but the photos almost have a grainy or "exposed" look to them.

2. The photo of Anakin and Dooku is not up to par with the work of YakChewie. There appears to be some sort of splice line in the middle of the background as if you took two printed backgrounds and taped them together.

3. I know that your story falls in the time line of the Clone Wars, but I just have a hard time believing that there are all of these "Dark Jedi". Also, the Ishi Tib Jedi uses Force Lightning, but I was under the impression that this was a Sith power. Seeing as how it was implied that all these "Dark Jedi" were padawans; I find it hard to believe that the Ishi Tib could tap into this power. This is one of my personal gripes about the majority of comic and novel EU stuff. It never fails some cool hero ends up giving into the power of the Dark Side and becomes the new villian (Kyp Durron, Jacen Solo, A'sharad Hett, etc.). It makes for an interesting story but its a never ending cycle.

4. Although your dioramas of the city look great, all the walls make it look claustrophobic as if the city is only as big as the walls. Maybe have the background walls open up to give the city more depth.

5. There were two pics of the Jedis that didn't look right. One was of the Jedi with the Emperor's hood. In one pic there seems to some sort of black line over his face that is not there in other pics. Also the pic of Kala has the face blacked out (I'm sure there is a reason for it), but doesn't match the grainy filtered look of the rest of the pic.

6. Although I really love your Duros Jedi, his arms seem too long. I'm sure its the gloves, not sure if its worth it to you to trim them down or not.

I really loved this story, looking forward to where this goes.

Thanks for all the comments everyone, much appreciated - I'll go back and reply to everyone this week!

One thing though, jlw515 - the only thing I can say about any pics looking grainy is maybe your monitor's settings show the pics brighter than mine do... on my monitor at home and work, I don't see what you're describing. For example, I don't see what you're saying on the Dooku pic unless I go into my photo program and enhance the lighting to be a lot brighter (roughly 51% brighter before I can see it on mine). By doing that, I certainly can see splice marks and areas where the photo was edited. That could be why the pics look grainy to you as well, sorry but I don't think there's a lot I can do about that. If I overcompensate, them on my end the pics end up way too dark.

That's interesting that you would mention my monitor settings. Actually I was looking at this chapter on my laptop with out the cord plugged in, which makes the monitor settings LOWER. So, I plugged it in this morning making the settings BRIGHTER and I could not see the line in the Anakin/Dooku pic.

However, the majority of the other pics still have a grainy/exposed look to them (except the planet shots & the cruiser). I'm not trying to be negative or anything. I'm just offering an honest critique. I think part of it was the glow from the "holo screen" table in the cruiser. To me, it gave an over exposed look and reminded me of some of your earlier work. Just not as crisp as some of your newer stuff.

Anyway, again, not trying to be negative; your photonovel is definitely the trailblazer for all the rest of us!!

Ok, going to try and get through a few of the reviews today! Starting off with one that gives me some constructive feedback.

As for the photos, I take that seriously and after investigating, really do think it's something to do with monitor/screen settings, brand of PC or something. I'm stumped. I've looked at this now on 4 computers (home, work, parents and library) and I still can't see what you are describing on the Dooku pic, or anything else. That is not to say that it's not being seen by more people though. About the only way I can see what you are referring to is to set a monitor's settings on the highest contrast level and increase the brightness to 100%. Then, I do see the image quality drop quite a bit. Unfortunately, I can't figure out a way to get the images to look the same quality for what may be different settings. The one pics that I know are definitely not colorful though are the Braatos VII ones, in that scene I was going for a night setting, with a cloud overcast as shown in the first pic of the city. I might have overdone it. And with the darkness over Kala's face, I really think that confirms my suspicions that what you see is a much brighter image than what I have. By increasing the brightness on my images in my program, I see a black smear like you are decsribing. Maybe if you don't mind, try darkening your monitor a bit to see if you no longer notice the smear. That's really the only thing that I can think of. Your screen is much brighter than mine.

Regarding the Dark Jedi, my thoughts are that since in the timeline of the story, it has been well over a year since Kala went rogue, he's had time to find Jedi that are disillusioned, and they aren't necessarily Padawans now. Bassius states, "They were once Padawans, their Masters have all been killed in the war... be ready for anything." So, in that sense what I was going for is these all could have had their masters killed almost three years ago, maybe even at Geonosis. Considering how much more powerful Anakin becomes from EP2 to EP3, I am thinking that in 2-3 years, a Jedi can take a great leap in understanding of the Force and the ability to use it, especially if one succumbs to the Dark Side. I'm with you on the Force Lightning, I don't like seeing it overused. That's why this is only the third time I've ever used it in the series, the other times being by Dooku and Palpatine. Nobody else has used it and I don't intend to start having characters show off that sort of skill often.

Regarding the dioramas, I can't begin to describe how much I struggle with making an area appear larger than life. I was really hoping that the establishing shot of the city would give a little more sense of the city's scope:

I tried to add in the sky and some towers in the background. But yeah, the area looks tight. The intent of the courtyard scene was to get around that by focusing on just one area, and I was hoping that it wouldn't look too condensed. I definitely have some area for improvement here, no question about it. My resources are still a lot more limited than I'd like though unfortunately. Maybe someday I'll progress from taking pics on my basement floor into a more studio like area, which will give me more freedom.

Well, I can't figure it out. From what I can tell, settings with a brighter image and higher contrast make my pics look pretty bad.

And no worries, I appreciate the honest feedback. I just don't know what I can do to accomodate what you are seeing. In the past, someone made a comment similar to what you were saying, and my solution was to darken my pics a lot. In return I received a lot of feedback that my images were so dark that people could not see much of what I did (a chapter in the Dathomir series is where this happened).

I'll see if I can find a happy medium, but unfortunately I don't think I'll be able to given how much I've tried in the past.

Again, no worries - I appreciate you telling me what you're seeing.

No, no, no, no no.....

As much as I wish I could take ANY credit for participating in this extraordinary achievement, this series has always been and remains 150% a Chewie production.

Your assistance is always appreciated buddy. :P

Thanks buddy, I'm glad you liked this chapter. It was a lot of fun to make. Took a hell of a lot of time to get so many customs made for it and also the diorama building was a pain, but I do still enjoy making them. Thanks for the feedback.
