The 8th Trial - CATASTROPHE

Postby YAK_Chewie » Sun May 17, 2015 7:17 pm

It's time for a new adventure in the story of Rykrof Enloe... read through, and please be sure to share your thoughts!

Image

For reference, you can catch up on the past chapters at the links below -- plus character profiles too:

The Enloe Trials Prologue: The Baron's Crusade
Chapter 1: Seeds of Insurrection
Chapter 2: Atrocity
Chapter 3: Revelations
Chapter 4: Shadow of Death
Chapter 5: Depths of Despair
Chapter 6: Seekers of the Dark Relic
Chapter 7: Veils of Deceit

And the character profiles are as follows...

Image
Rykrof Enloe - Homeworld - Naboo. Former Republic Commander, who is now an enemy of the Empire. He has a history of entanglements with the Badoo Corba terrorist organization, dating back prior to the Clone Wars. He is a former close friend of Imperial Baron Tylin Gere and has been forced to embark on a desperate mission to acquire an ancient Sith artifact for Tylin - which has recently ended in failure. He now carries an unbearable burden... the only way to save his family is to betray his Jedi ally, Kala Mly Shundi.

Image
Alyssa Enloe - Homeworld - Naboo. The wife of Rykrof Enloe, Alyssa has lived a hard life being married to Rykrof, and has been the target of Rykrof's enemies over the years. She is a survivor, but is now in the captivity of Imperial Baron Tylin Gere.

Image
Caldin Enloe - Homeworld - Naboo. The son of Rykrof and Alyssa Enloe. His grandmother was a Jedi Master. Former Jedi, Kala Mly Shundi, has sensed that the boy is Force-sensitive. Caldin is now in the captivity of Imperial Baron Tylin Gere and has grown to resent his father.

Image
Freelo Macklar - Homeworld - Dak. Former freelance scientist who became friends with Rykrof Enloe during the Clone Wars. Freelo has been known to be timid, but is extremely loyal to the Enloe family.

Image
Kala Mly Shundi - Homeworld - Coruscant. Kala was once the apprentice of Rykrof Enloe's mother, who was a Jedi Master. Kala has flirted with the Dark Side of the Force and experienced terrible visions of the future. He barely survived Order 66, getting ambushed by clone troopers on Braatos VII. He now works with the Rebel Underground in the struggle against the Galactic Empire.

Image
Traedon Cusiro - Homeworld - Corellia. Former bounty hunter who once worked for the Badoo Corba terrorists. He helped Rykrof escape from Separatists on Dathomir during the Clone Wars, but later attempted to kill Senator Padme Amidala. After escaping from prison, he swore an oath to bring down the Empire and joined forces with Kala Mly Shundi.

Image
T-3PO - Homeword - Cybot Galactica. Protocol Droid that has served the Enloe family for years. He survived an Imperial attack on the Enloe homestead and a terrible ordeal on Dathomir.

Image
Baron Tylin Gere - Homeworld - Naboo. Former close ally of Rykrof Enloe, the two served as Republic Peace Officers prior to the Clone Wars and later as officers in the Grand Army of the Republic. Tylin thirsts for power and has become obsessed with acquiring an ancient Sith artifact, which was recently acquired by Darth Vader, who he secretly sees as a rival. He has taken custody of Alyssa and Caldin Enloe, and ordered the death of Rykrof's father.

Image
Emperor Palpatine - Homeword - Naboo. Dark Lord of the Sith and the undisputed leader of the Galactic Empire. Attempted to mold Rykrof Enloe as the ideal Imperial officer but failed. He takes great interest in Baron Tylin Gere's personal quests for power and admires his ambition.

Image
Darth Vader - Homeworld - Tatooine. Dark Lord of the Sith and follows the instructions of his master, Emperor Palpatine. During the Clone Wars, he was once friends with Rykrof Enloe. He considers Rykrof a traitor to the Empire but also is fully aware that Rykrof once helped protect Padme Amidala. However, his loyalties to Emperor Palpatine are secure.

Image
Banyss... a remote world secretly housing a small rebel faction...

Image
...and the temporary residence of Rykrof Enloe.

Image
In recent months, his life has fallen apart...

Image
Beginning with twisted ambitions by Imperial Baron Tylin Gere...

Image
...which led to the brutal killing of his father...

Image
...and the separation from, and resentment of, his son.

Image
Events compelled Rykrof to reunite with former Jedi, Kala Mly Shundi, and his band of rebels...

Image
...soon they found themselves facing perilous dangers on Dathomir!

Image
Horrors beyond imagination...

Image
...and an encounter with Darth Vader!

Image
Now, he must deal with the hard fact that the device given to him by Vader has revealed the secret location of Kala's rebel faction!

Image
Through his mastery of the Force, Kala has been able to sense what has happened...

Image
...and takes Rykrof to explain the situation to former Senator, Tame Heem.

Image
"I'm afraid there isn't much time to discuss options," Rykrof tells the Ithorian leader.
"The Empire is headed this way. Kala is going to escort you off the planet."

Image
"That is not a rational course of action," Kala says.
"Vader is coming. I must face him... and you must be the one to leave."

Image
Alarmed, Tame Heem disagrees with the plan completely.
"No! We must alert Ambassador Sulo!"

Image
"I'll speak with Sulo, but you have to leave with Kala," Rykrof insists, turning away momentarily.
"I can't keep you safe... but Kala can."

Image
"But the escape cruiser is not currently space worthy," the Ithorian scowls.
"Everyone else will be killed!"

Image
"I'll make certain Sulo is prepared for the assault," Rykrof counters.
"This place isn't going down without a fight."

Image
"Very well," Kala laments, knowing Rykrof's decision is made.
"I will dump the device to buy you as much time as possible..."

Image
"...and I will do everything in my power to locate your son; and protect him."

Image
"May the Force be with you," Rykrof whispers as Kala closes the hatch...

Image
...and the stolen Badoo Corba shuttle rises toward the atmosphere.

Image
"How far is the commander center from here?" Rykrof requests of the nearest soldier.

Image
"I'll take you there!"

Image
Within minutes, Rykrof bursts into the command center...

Image
"Enloe?" Ambassador Sulo asks.
"You can't just barge in here!"

Image
"Not much time," Rykrof gasps.
"Imperials are on their way."

Image
"What are you rambling about?" Sulo demands.
"Nobody knows of our location!"

Image
"I sense a disturbance in the Force," former Jedi Clorri Lislo says, stepping forward.

Image
"I've dealt with your disturbances all too often," Sulo retorts.
"I need evidence the Empire is coming, not irrational feelings from you Jedi."

Image
"Master Shundi left the planet in a hurry," she says, ignoring the insult.
"Why would he do this without informing us?"

Image
"He needed to get Tame Heem off the planet as quick possible," Rykrof tells her.
"And..."

Image
"Sir, he's right," a senior technician states.
"A pair of Star Destroyers has just jumped out of hyperspace!"

Image
"This... c...can't be happ...ening," Sulo stutters.

Image
"Get the crews to their fighters!" Clorri shouts as she and Rykrof leave to rally the troops!

Image
Above the base, Imperial TIE Fighters disembark from their mother ships...

Image
...while the rebels hastily scramble their defenses!

Image
Their speeders race above the forest line...

Image
...and take to the air!

Image
The rebel forces are immediately met by enemy fire!

Image
The resistance fighters quickly find themselves outnumbered...

Image
...and are eliminated!

Image
Efficient and determined, the Imperial forces swiftly land their assault troops...

Image
...pressing toward the rebel defenses!

Image
However, Ambassador Sulo's forces are better prepared for a land battle than aerial combat...

Image
...and strike back at the enemy!

Image
But the Stormtroopers quickly surround their adversaries...

Image
...who find themselves under heavy fire!

Image
Several rebel troopers are struck down!

Image
But the remaining forces rally to form a counterstrike!

Image
Hiding behind some ruins, brave Sergeant Trank fires at a passing Imperial walker...

Image
...but is no match for the armored menace, which turns and delivers a lethal blast!

Image
The inevitable then happens...

Image
...as the remaining survivors must fall into a full retreat!

Image
Soon, the compound walls are breached...

Image
...and Stormtroopers pour into the base!

Image
"Hit them with everything you've got!" Corporal Bafrin shouts to his comrades...

Image
...as he strikes down an advancing Imperial!

Image
In the midst of the battle, two Jedi fend off the attacking forces...

Image
...both sensing this day will be their last.

Image
"There is no death; there is only the Force," Paladin Attpo Teacro reminds his Jedi ally.

Image
"Keep telling yourself that!" Clorri yells.

Image
"But I'm killing as many Imperials as I can!"

Image
In spite of the Jedi efforts, enemy forces continue to storm the compound...

Image
...crushing the resistance!

Image
The Empire's numbers are too vast...

Image
...and their war machines are far too powerful!

Image
Meanwhile, the command center is being threatened...

Image
...forcing Ambassador Sulo to attempt a hasty escape!

Image
"Damn you Enloe, where are you?" he growls as his loyal troops defend their position...

Image
...but their efforts are in vain...

Image
...as the Sullustan leader is quickly cut down...

Image
...and lies motionless on the ground!

Image
Nearby, Traedon Cusiro fends off the rush of Imperials...

Image
...who are unable to land a shot on the former bounty hunter!

Image
He efficiently brings down every threat in his sights!

Image
"Traedon!" Rykrof shouts above the thundering blaster fire.

Image
"Find Freelo," Rykrof insists.
"And get him out of here!"

Image
"Are you crazy? What about you?"

Image
"Don't argue with me on this!" Rykrof pleads.
"Get him to the forest... and stick together!"

Image
"I'll catch up with you!"

Image
Even as Rykrof continues to desperately fend off the Imperials, the enemy continues to advance!

Image
"Fall back!"

Image
"There's too many of them!"

Image
On the southern flank, Freelo and T-3PO argue about the desperate situation.

Image
"We have to find Rykrof," Freelo insists.
"Either you come with me, or I'm leaving you here!"

Image
"I just got repaired, you floundering amphibian!" the droid snaps back.
"I'm not wandering through this madness only to get blasted into a million pieces!"

Image
Suddenly, a shot shatters the droid's casing!

Image
"Something must have happened to me," the droid observes.

Image
"Oh no! I'm everywhere!"

Image
Meanwhile, the Imperials continue the slaughter of the rebel faction...

Image
...as only small pockets of resistance remain.

Image
The situation has become hopeless!

Image
Even the command center has been overrun by the Stormtrooper battalion.

Image
Preparations are quickly made...

Image
...for the arrival of Darth Vader.

wow, excellent work as always

I really liked some of the camera angles you used for the resistance fighter ships flights, and I loved seeing the vintage mini rig!

Man that was phenomenal, bravo!

The photography is just getting better and better, I'm noticing it because it's spectacular. The environments are seamless, it really feels like these are actors in a human scale world. The special effects look good. The flashback effects are really good. You didn't go black and white, you did that time warp effect, very very cool. Nice use of emphasis in the dialogue.

I don't like Rykrof's outfit, too much like Han Solo. He always had such awesome digs in The Enloe Chronicles. All the customs abound though, wow, awesome!

Those were the technical merits; on to the story...

The battle of Hoth! That's what this reminded me of, of course. Really great, the imperial forces are formidable, these rebels are no match whatsoever. You set it up well. Vader arriving... should be interesting.

Lots of jedi still around! Clorri Lislo... pretty cool, I like her. Great name. I wonder if you...

The protocol droid brings humor, well placed. Damn those protocol droids are like English butlers.

Now I'm sad again, have to wait months to see what happens :-( How long?

Another killer installment! You really did a good job building the suspense. I got a good giggle when the droid got blasted. I love the way you photographed the female Jedi's Force trick with the rocks. And as always so many drool worthy customs! Can't wait for the next installment.

Thanks, bud!

Adding in a bit of a flight battle was challenging, that is not an area of strength for me. I made that custom airspeeder a long time ago, been waiting forever to get to use it! Throwing in the vintage mini-rig was a "must" in my opinion. Heh.

Appreciate the feedback!

Thanks buddy, I appreciate the feedback.

Building suspense in this kind of genre isn't easy, and I really never feel like I accomplish what I set out to do, but I do appreciate the support!

I'm glad you liked seeing the droid get blasted. The droid has been through quite a bit now in the past few chapters. I have some more "fun" planned with that.

The Force push was a fun shot to work on. Much of the time, I don't like working on "digital" shots but I did enjoy that one.

Again, thank you for the feedback and the support! It means a lot to me.

I appreciate that, I'm trying as hard as I can to get the pics as good as I can. I'm still very amateur with photography but I already look back at stuff from 1-2 years ago and do see a difference.

The environments are the real "leap forward" for me, I think. I've got a lot more patience these days and don't rush things just to get a story in. Same goes with the customs, I am taking my time now, which I know you've noticed as there is a longer break between chapters... most of that is busy work schedule and still trying to have a life with my kids and wife!

Oh, glad you liked the "time warp" effect too.

Darth Kikinou wrote:I don't like Rykrof's outfit, too much like Han Solo. He always had such awesome digs in The Enloe Chronicles. All the customs abound though, wow, awesome!

Yeah, yeah, I know. :)

Next, he's gonna have a spicy relationship with a princess, only to get frozen in carbonite - just get ready. 8)

Yeah, I'm trying to give idea that the Empire is in complete control, just squashing out pockets of resistance. At least for now.

Vader's arrival is for one reason and one reason only - to personally destroy the Jedi. Otherwise, they'd just bomb the heck out of the planet.

Darth Kikinou wrote:Lots of jedi still around! Clorri Lislo... pretty cool, I like her. Great name. I wonder if you...

Wonder if what? Don't keep me hanging like that.

On any note, Clorri is a character I created back when The Enloe Chronicles began, I dunno, back around 2004? She never made it into a story before. I don't know what I did with the old customs of her. I think I sold them?

Darth Kikinou wrote:The protocol droid brings humor, well placed. Damn those protocol droids are like English butlers.

Ha ha, yes, gotta love it. I think stories like this need to include some humor without making it stupid. I think there is a fine line there, which I try to not cross.

Darth Kikinou wrote:Now I'm sad again, have to wait months to see what happens :-( How long?

I won't be quite as long of a wait for Chapter 9. I'd say Aug/Sept, if not faster. It will be a shorter chapter, and set on the same planet. I'm not going to drag this battle or era of the story out.

Something major will happen in the next chapter though. And it won't be good for Rykrof. It will be a turning point, however, which I hope will move the story forward a few more years.

There may be a long wait for Chapter 10 though. I'm not in a rush to get it done, there are going to be extensive dioramas needed for Chapters 10-12, which will focus on Rykrof - and not Traedon, Freelo, Kala, etc. We're going to see several new characters introduced shortly that will play key roles in the series. Other than Rykrof, there won't be too many familiar faces for quite some time.

Awesome chapter Justin, well worth the wait for sure! I think one major aspect I like is the pacing of the scene, however I was really hoping to see that mini-rig see some more action! :p

You did a good job on the aerial battle as well! I had been curious for my own work on how to pull that off, and have been thinking of a few ways in which that could be pulled off. You did an excellent job though! You were definitely about to make the battle seem as if it had a wide scope and range of the base, which was awesome. It might be a bit too early to say this, but I can't wait to check out the next chapter!

Another great instalment :) Guys before me said a lot, but I must add that the not only the quality, but the spirit of the pics is very movie-like, very dramatic.
The paintjob on the hood here is superb, brings out the texture in unbelievable level.
http://www.yakfaceforums.com/Chewie2/cata22.jpg

This here must be one of my favourites
http://www.yakfaceforums.com/Chewie2/cata52.jpg

Also this one, I just love these rebels with the scarves and the use of the mini-rig as a canon is genius!
http://www.yakfaceforums.com/Chewie2/cata53.jpg

And of course the line Ï'm everywhere!" steals the show :)
http://www.yakfaceforums.com/Chewie2/cata102.jpg

The story gets darker and seems hopleless, I thought the Sullustan (another favourite custom) was going to survive. But one has got to appreciate the fact that at least in some fiction the Stormtroopers are really a efficient force :)
I hope you finish the next installment sooner and I also agree that Rykrof needs change of wardrobe already ;)
Keep it up!
This hobby just gets curiouser and curiouser!

Thank you, kind sir! And we actually might see more mini-rig action in the next chapter. After all, Rykrof did instruct Traedon to get Freelo to safety in the forest...

I'm glad you liked the aerial fight too, I'm not 100% happy with it, but it worked out decent enough, I think. It's difficult making things seem "bigger" than they really are too, which I try and make happen with my scenery more than actual digital effects/etc. Perhaps at some point I will be more comfortable using more digital scenery and all that, but for the time being, I'm sticking with actual hand made dioramas - to me, that is a lot more fun, and really feels "right" - a lot of that is probably because I'm not a fan of over-used CGI.

If things go well, I'll have the next chapter up in a couple months.

Thanks again for taking the time to read, and provide feedback - it means a lot.

Chewie,

I won't lie. April has been a tough month for me. But this chapter really brightens my day. One of the things I have liked about your stories is the storyline and dialogue--which makes these so fun.

This episode really was action packed and I loved it. Pure Saturday morning serial. Wonderful photography. The positioning of figures in combat positions and explosions are really fun. The blown up droid is great. Upon a second reading the dialogue is really top notch too.

The custom figures are super. I am not big on so many jedi remaining and playing prominent roles in the rebellion. But Lucas, Disney and hasbro disagree so I won't get on you for the direction. Those are wonderfully contructed figures and I really like them. And based on the storyline we probably lose them quick. I like the exchange between them during the battle.

That is not a knock on Kala--who is a neat character who really was a strong addition to the Clone War era. But we are not at the full blown official rebellion era either.

Great catch up on the recent events. The dreamy setting. Enloe's father looks so dead. Great photography.

This is just well done. The scenery and use of the Endor mini rig is FANTASTIC. I really like it. Can't wait for more.

Pure fun. Thanks. Keep up the great work. Another edited/new comment. I like the change of pace; one episode we have multiple locations as different pieces of the storyline is explored. In this chapter we fous on battle at the hidden rebel base. Artistically I like the flow.

Also--while not cheap the new jurassic park monsters and the schleich dinosaurs would make positive additions background wise for future chapters. Speaking of dinosaurs, I really liked having that feathered one from chapter 7.

Another fantastic chapter!

The kind of claustrophobic action shots lend themselves well to creating a sense of real tension to the battle. It's hard to get convincing action shots out of action figures, but you manage it masterfully here and make the battle seem real. Well-done. Oh, and nice digital effects in the action shots as well.

I always love your customs, but all of your rebel soldiers through this chapter take the cake. I *love* how you differentiated them enough to make it seem like they're a ragtag bunch, but there were enough similar motifs in their outfits to make it obvious that they were a group.

The protocol droid humor was great. It's really (really really) tough to write humor well, but those couple of lines/scenes nailed it. "I'm everywhere." Heh. Perfect.

Intrigued to see how all of this ends next chapter. I have a feeling that we'll be seeing the end of several of these characters. Do you find it hard to kill off characters that you worked so hard to create? As I still work on never-ending prep work and character creation for my own (maybe someday) photo novel, the thought of killing off these people that have been in my head terrifies me. lol. Kill your darlings, as they say... But it's a particularly strange sort of revision when it is a custom figure as well as words on paper. Maybe I'm getting far too "meta" here. haha.

Regardless, more fantastic work here. I love reading these stories and seeing your creations. Looking forward to more.

Another awesome chapter my friend! I was sooo happy to see Kala escape, I really thought you were gonna kill him off! Awesome battle sequence, the effects were really well done and it had nice pacing to it. Only nitpick would be that the aerial battle could've lasted another 1-3 frames, it just seemed a little rushed. Obviously loved the other Jedi and the awesome effects you used for their Force powers. Cannot wait to see Vader arrive, that should be interesting!

As always, these are every bit as much as fun as any professional cannon piece of Star Wars lore. You've been at this a long time and provided so much entertainment for so many fans, thank you! Now get to work on the next one!

Another great installment, Chewie. Wonderful customs once again and I love the use of the Endor Forest Ranger and the McQ Airspeeders as well. I really wish Hasbro would Focus on stuff like that again because those ships are a lot of fun.

I really like how here we see how efficient the Empire is and not a bunch of bumbling idiots (like stormtroopers on Rebels). Obviously, they had to be good to Keep the universe under control.

I'm really looking Forward to the next chapter as well as Chapters 10-12. The way you described them, it sounds like the story is going to take another interesting turn.
