Long time listener, first time caller.

Although I am a life-long collector of action figures, I am a relatively new customiser of them, having only started in November 2010. Since then, putting together these predominantly 3.75" scale figures and their little clothes has gone from being a fun weekend hobby to being something that has kept my head screwed on straight given work stresses and the like.

Being relatively new to customising, I would be very appreciative of receiving comments, suggestions and general feedback. I hope that I am getting better, but I think that I've got a long way to go to be in the same ballpark (or even sport) as some other customisers around here and "teh interwebs" in general.

While I started with the intention of working just on Star Wars customs, I have branched out considerably lately with a lot of comic, TV and other movie characters - let me know if it is appropriate to post them here and I will.

To get this thread started, I will post some of my better looking figures. These have appeared on a couple of other sites (including my DeviantArt gallery - http://mousedroid-hoojib.deviantart.com/gallery) so apologies if you've seen them before.

* Rianna Saren, utilising parts from POTF2 Lyn Me (for the head), Marvel Universe Kitty Pryde (for the entire body sans head) , Marvel Universe Extremis Armour Iron Man (for the shoulder armour) and POTF2 Ponda Baba (for the pistol)

Image

* Eeusu Estornii, utilising a SlayerDesignStudio head , Episode I Padme Naberrie (for the body sans head and arms) and Power Of The Jedi POTJ Bespin Guard (for the arms)

* General Karsel Vulk'ges, utilising a Slayer Design Studio head, Clone Wars Anakin Skywalker (modified, for the body sans head, forearms, lower legs and robes), The Corps Kenji Shinto "Rain" (for the forearms and lower legs), Marvel Universe Black Widow (for pieces of the belt and gauntlets which became the belt buckle and ammo clip) and Legacy Collection Shaak Ti (for a tiny piece of the plastic scarf, which became the rank insignia)

Image

* Dardo, utilising Slayer Design Studio head, The Corps Ethan "Spade" Crowne (modified, for the entire body, sans head) and some modelling clay

Image

* Nyrat Agira, utilising Dragonball Evolution Bulma (for the head, sans hair), Marvel Universe Black Widow (for the entire body, sans head), some modelling clay and some cheap, coloured hair extensions

Image

* George R. Binks, utilising Hallmark 2001 Jar Jar Binks ornament (for the hands, ears and majority of the head, heavily modified), The Corps "Mirage" (for the body, sans head and hands) and "World Jurassic" T.Rex (for the lower jaw)

Image

* Delva Racine, utilising POTF2 Princess Leia New Likeness (for the head, hands and legs, sans feet), POTF2 Rystall (modified, for the arms and chest) and Thirtieth Anniversary Padme Amidala (for the feet)

Image

* Dormé, utilising Thirtieth Anniversary Padmé (modified, for the head), some modelling clay and a selection of left-over POTF2 bits and pieces

In the waning days of the Republic, Chancellor Valorum, amidst allegations of corruption, decided to implement a new measure to try to bring a level of excitement back to his constituents - a Miss Universe competition.

Whereas it was expected that any one of a number of Twi'lek beauties would be bestowed with the inaugural crown, there was a degree of shock when a lovely Wookiee lady - Geyytobuck - was awarded the prize. One more piece of evidence of the corruption rife in the government; or is galactic beauty becoming more civilised?

Recipe:

* Legacy Collection Chewbacca (for the entire body, sans head and more piece of the middle section)
* Marvel Universe Black Widow (for pieces of the hair)
* some modelling clay
* some ribbon
* some paint (Citadel "Grave Yard Earth", "Bubonic Brown", "Chaos Black", "Skull White")

This was just an experiment to see whether sculpting fur would be feasible, rather than a character that I went out of my way to create. I had thought about making a proper (semi-transparent) dress rather than just a sash as I ended up with, but given that Wookiees don't typically wear clothes, it seemed a bridge too far. Of course, Wookiee women also have six breasts, so I have taken some in-universe liberties with the character anyway.

Image Image Image Image Image

According to Clan Of The Wroshyr, Geyytobuck translates roughly from Shyriiwook as "great singer".

Seeing JohnGWolf's "Rutian Twi lek Pirate" picture on DeviantArt inspired me to turn what is a great character design in 2D into a 3.75" figure - I hope I did it justice. Given that the look of my version of it has deviated a little from the source material - particularly the head and details on the vest - I thought that I would grant her a unique name - Toree'ant, using the Star Wars Galaxies Random Name Generator.

Recipe:

* Marvel Universe Black Widow (modified, for the head and the wrist guantlet which became the belt buckle)
* Vintage Collection Zam Wessell (very heavily modified, for the entire body, sans head and feet)
* Revenge Of The Sith Aayla Secura (for the feet)
* Power Of The Jedi Bespin Guard (modified, for the vest)
* Clone Wars Anakin Skywalker (modified, for the kama which became the shin guards)
* Clone Wars Captain Rex (for the pistol which became the body of the gun)
* Vintage Collection Sandtrooper (for the rifle, which became the barrel and sight of the gun)
* GI Joe Resolute Cobra Commander (for the sword)
* some modelling clay
* some material
* some paint (Citadel "Ultramarines Blue", "Ice Blue", "Skull White", "Chaos Black", "Codex Grey", "Scorched Brown", "Mithril Silver")

I am quite happy with how this whole figure has turned out, from the gun (being two significantly different pieces brought together), to the sculpted chest details (breasts and belly on top of a significantly modified Zam Wessell) to the head (once more sculpted) - everything worked pretty much exactly as I had hoped, which is relatively uncommon for me.

Image Image Image Image

Don't let her looks fool you - Toree'ant is a ruthless pirate guest waiting for the right moment to strike.

Thanks a bunch ghostskull18, drod26 and stroebel83 - your comments mean a great deal.

In the period roughly 700 years prior to the rise of Darth Sidious, the young padawan Yoda looked up to a group of Jedi who were equally adept with their fists as they were with a lightsaber. It was this "uncivilised" method of fighting that kept their exploits out of the Jedi Holocron and thus once their time past, they were forgotten by both the Republic and its later generation of protectors.

* Jedi Master Ecurb-eel, utilising a SlayerDesignStudio head and GI Joe ROC Snake Eyes (for the entire body, sans head)

Image

* Jedi Master Tretsim Loofehtytip, utilising a SlayerDesignStudio head and Marvel Universe Union Jack (for the entire body, sans head)

Image

* Jedi Grand Master Sirron Reklaw, utilising a SlayerDesignStudio head, Dragonball Evolution Piccolo (for the body, sans head) and Marvel Universe Black Widow (for elements from the belt and wrist gauntlets)

Ha! Love the play on names for Chuck Norris and Mister T!

Recite the Jedi Code: There is no emotion, only Chuck Norris telling you to cry.

There is no ignorance, only Chuck Norris telling you you're stupid.

There is no passion, only Chuck Norris...alright, you get the point!

On a serious note, very nice work on the soft goods for your figs. You rarely see customizers utilize soft goods the way you have; you've made yourself unique!

Always great to see another soft goods freak out there! You have a great eye when it comes to your choice of materials. It's critical to use fabrics that are properly scaled to the size of the figures. Sometimes people forget that important detail. You have mastered that element for sure. Also your stitch lines are beautiful, symmetrical, straight and evenly spaced. Believe me, I feel your pain when it comes to making tiny little outfits for this size of figure. Also, your parts selection for the base figures is great. It's hard to keep the articulation when you start layering cloth onto joints but apparently your figures retain their full range of motion. Very tricky to pull off, great job

It's great seeing such refreshing work, talk about a breath of fresh air seeing so many fantastic customs... we don't see enough female customs to be honest, and to see soft goods worked in so well is fun to see.

I'm amazed by the Gungan, you really put that together for a truly one-of-a-kind figure.

Dorme also looks fantastic, I really wish that Hasbro would make her. Who knows, with a focus on AOTC next year, maybe that will finally happen?

Eeusu Estornii is the best of the bunch though, I think. It turned out very freaky, which really captures the feel of the character. I distinctly remember seeing promo photos of that alien before ROTS came out, but don't know if she was ever seen in the background or not.

Thanks for sharing your great work with us, and hope to hear your thoughts on some of the other customs posted around here too!

Thank-you so much JediMerc, hyperdrive, ghostskull18 and YAK_Chewie for your comments. I really appreciate you all taking the time to look.

In regards to materials used for this scale of figures, discovering lycra/spandex was the greatest thing ever in the history of ever for me. It doesn't fray (so no messy hanging threads or nail polish stains), it is quite cheap at the scales that are required for 1:18 costumes, and it stretches very nicely, which is particularly helpful in making figure hugging costumes for females. I do all of stitching by hand, so having a degree of "give" in the material makes the whole process so much smoother.

Given how many males there seem to be in this hobby, I am really surprised that there aren't more female figures on display. Perhaps I am just strange, but sculpting the female form and making nice clothes is one of my favourite aspects of the hobby.

I'm guessing that I probably shouldn't, but I thought that I might post some non-Star Wars customs here too. Please let me know if this sort of thing is inappropriate.

* New 52 young Superman, utilising a SlayerDesignStudio head, GI Joe Resolute Roadblock (modified, for the entire body sans head, feet and hands), GI Joe ROC Heavy Duty (for the feet) and Marvel Universe Luke Cage (for the hands)

Lovebunny utilises Dragonball Evolution Bulma (modified, for the head and feet), GI Joe ROC Baroness (modified, for the body sans head, feet and left forearm), Clone Wars TCW Anakin Skywalker (modified, for the left forearm) and some modelling clay, while Mr Hell utilises Austwide Toys "Destroyer Series" Zombie (modified, for the head), Austwide Toys "World Jurassic" T.Rex (for the neck, chest and arms), Big W "Sea World" Octopus (modified, for the bottom part of the tentacles), Big W "Sea World" Starfish (modified, for the top part of the tentacles) and some household plastic.

As mentioned, please let me know if these non-SW customs are inapparopriate to post here.

Thanks YAK_Chewie.

In 2002, a short-lived Birds Of Prey TV show was developed that, due to poor ratings, only lasted a total of 13 episodes. Whereas the comic version of BoP featured Helena Bertinelli as The Huntress, the TV version used the old (and now new again) Earth 2 concept of Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle's daughter Helena (Wayne in comics, Kyle on TV) donning a revealing costume with inappropriate footwear and fighting crime. This is my version of the character.

Image

Recipe:

* GI Joe Resolute Flint (heavily modified, for the entire body sans head and feet)
* GI Joe Rise Of Cobra Baroness (for the feet)
* Playmates Star Trek Checkov (modified, for the head)
* GI Joe Resolute Scarlett (for the crossbow)
* some material
* some modelling clay
* some paint (Citadel "Chaos Black", "Skull White", "Elf Flesh", "Mithril Silver", "Blood Red")

Given that I seem to have much more male fodder than female, yet I tend to make more female characters than male, I thought that I would continue to experiment in "gender reassignment surgery" for 3.75" figures. The combination of Flint, Checkov and a rotary tool I think has come out pretty well:

Image

The hairstyle didn't come out as I had originally planned, but still works in the context of the character. Huntress perhaps is a little too buxom in this incarnation, but I am explaining it away that she is wearing a particularly tight corset.

Image Image Image Image Image

Huntress' cleavage is as much a weapon as her trusty crossbow:

Born into a wealthy mining family in the Wroonian colony on Saleucami, Arlan Candroon had the galaxy at his feet.

A particularly bright child, Arlan studied with the greatest minds of the Old Republic, excelling in the arts and having a particular passion for playing the Dorenian Beshniquel. As a gift for excelling in a music competition for students from the Inner Rim, Arlan received a gold plated cortosis chain, which he wore proudly as a belt.

Image

Unfortunately, as most teens do, Arlan rebelled against his family and mentors and fell in with a gang of pirates. Donning the fashion of the day along with a powerful sidearm and sharp knife, Arlan became a smuggler for hire. He did however keep the cortosis chain as part of his couture which proved to come in very handy when he had an unfortunate run-in with a Sith Lord.

Image

Losing his right arm and suffering numerous deep cuts across his face and torso changed Arlan's outlook on life in the Old Republic. Fitted with a prosthesis, Arlan retired from smuggling to become an honest merchant ship's captain, based out of Dantooine.

Recipes

Young Arlan:

* Episode I Anakin Skywalker Tatooine (for the head)

Having not played The Old Republic game but being very interested in the challenge of making a set of three figures, I took the "evolutions" part of the Joint Site Tribute brief to its extreme showing how one character evolved from a child, through a rebellious teen to a reserved old man. The three figures took around fifteen hours to complete from start to finish once I had the basic idea of what I was going to work upon. The name was a result of using the Star Wars Random Name Generator.
