Long time listener, first time caller.

Although I am a life-long collector of action figures, I am a relatively new customiser of them, having only started in November 2010. Since then, putting together these predominantly 3.75" scale figures and their little clothes has gone from being a fun weekend hobby to being something that has kept my head screwed on straight given work stresses and the like.

Being relatively new to customising, I would be very appreciative of receiving comments, suggestions and general feedback. I hope that I am getting better, but I think that I've got a long way to go to be in the same ballpark (or even sport) as some other customisers around here and "teh interwebs" in general.

While I started with the intention of working just on Star Wars customs, I have branched out considerably lately with a lot of comic, TV and other movie characters - let me know if it is appropriate to post them here and I will.

To get this thread started, I will post some of my better looking figures. These have appeared on a couple of other sites (including my DeviantArt gallery - http://mousedroid-hoojib.deviantart.com/gallery) so apologies if you've seen them before.

Seeing JohnGWolf's "Rutian Twi lek Pirate" picture on DeviantArt inspired me to turn what is a great character design in 2D into a 3.75" figure - I hope I did it justice. Given that the look of my version of it has deviated a little from the source material - particularly the head and details on the vest - I thought that I would grant her a unique name - Toree'ant, using the Star Wars Galaxies Random Name Generator.

Recipe:

* Marvel Universe Black Widow (modified, for the head and the wrist guantlet which became the belt buckle)
* Vintage Collection Zam Wessell (very heavily modified, for the entire body, sans head and feet)
* Revenge Of The Sith Aayla Secura (for the feet)
* Power Of The Jedi Bespin Guard (modified, for the vest)
* Clone Wars Anakin Skywalker (modified, for the kama which became the shin guards)
* Clone Wars Captain Rex (for the pistol which became the body of the gun)
* Vintage Collection Sandtrooper (for the rifle, which became the barrel and sight of the gun)
* GI Joe Resolute Cobra Commander (for the sword)
* some modelling clay
* some material
* some paint (Citadel "Ultramarines Blue", "Ice Blue", "Skull White", "Chaos Black", "Codex Grey", "Scorched Brown", "Mithril Silver")

I am quite happy with how this whole figure has turned out, from the gun (being two significantly different pieces brought together), to the sculpted chest details (breasts and belly on top of a significantly modified Zam Wessell) to the head (once more sculpted) - everything worked pretty much exactly as I had hoped, which is relatively uncommon for me.

Don't let her looks fool you - Toree'ant is a ruthless pirate guest waiting for the right moment to strike.

Very cool, I like a lot of your paint apps. Way to use those reaper parts and make them stand out

Thanks a bunch ghostskull18, drod26 and stroebel83 - your comments mean a great deal.

In the period roughly 700 years prior to the rise of Darth Sidious, the young padawan Yoda looked up to a group of Jedi who were equally adept with their fists as they were with a lightsaber. It was this "uncivilised" method of fighting that kept their exploits out of the Jedi Holocron and thus once their time past, they were forgotten by both the Republic and its later generation of protectors.

* Jedi Master Ecurb-eel, utilising a SlayerDesignStudio head and GI Joe ROC Snake Eyes (for the entire body, sans head)

Ha! Love the play on names for Chuck Norris and Mister T!

Recite the Jedi Code: There is no emotion, only Chuck Norris telling you to cry.

There is no ignorance, only Chuck Norris telling you you're stupid.

There is no passion, only Chuck Norris...alright, you get the point!

On a serious note, very nice work on the soft goods for your figs. You rarely see customizers utilize soft goods the way you have; you've made yourself unique!

Always great to see another soft goods freak out there! You have a great eye when it comes to your choice of materials. It's critical to use fabrics that are properly scaled to the size of the figures. Sometimes people forget that important detail. You have mastered that element for sure. Also your stitch lines are beautiful, symmetrical, straight and evenly spaced. Believe me, I feel your pain when it comes to making tiny little outfits for this size of figure. Also, your parts selection for the base figures is great. It's hard to keep the articulation when you start layering cloth onto joints but apparently your figures retain their full range of motion. Very tricky to pull off, great job

It's great seeing such refreshing work, talk about a breath of fresh air seeing so many fantastic customs... we don't see enough female customs to be honest, and to see soft goods worked in so well is fun to see.

I'm amazed by the Gungan, you really put that together for a truly one-of-a-kind figure.

Dorme also looks fantastic, I really wish that Hasbro would make her. Who knows, with a focus on AOTC next year, maybe that will finally happen?

Eeusu Estornii is the best of the bunch though, I think. It turned out very freaky, which really captures the feel of the character. I distinctly remember seeing promo photos of that alien before ROTS came out, but don't know if she was ever seen in the background or not.

Thanks for sharing your great work with us, and hope to hear your thoughts on some of the other customs posted around here too!

:wink:

Thank-you so much JediMerc, hyperdrive, ghostskull18 and YAK_Chewie for your comments. I really appreciate you all taking the time to look.

In regards to materials used for this scale of figures, discovering lycra/spandex was the greatest thing ever in the history of ever for me. It doesn't fray (so no messy hanging threads or nail polish stains), it is quite cheap at the scales that are required for 1:18 costumes, and it stretches very nicely, which is particularly helpful in making figure hugging costumes for females. I do all of stitching by hand, so having a degree of "give" in the material makes the whole process so much smoother.

Given how many males there seem to be in this hobby, I am really surprised that there aren't more female figures on display. Perhaps I am just strange, but sculpting the female form and making nice clothes is one of my favourite aspects of the hobby.

I'm guessing that I probably shouldn't, but I thought that I might post some non-Star Wars customs here too. Please let me know if this sort of thing is inappropriate.

Thanks YAK_Chewie.

In 2002, a short-lived Birds Of Prey TV show was developed that, due to poor ratings, only lasted a total of 13 episodes. Whereas the comic version of BoP featured Helena Bertinelli as The Huntress, the TV version used the old (and now new again) Earth 2 concept of Bruce Wayne and Selina Kyle's daughter Helena (Wayne in comics, Kyle on TV) donning a revealing costume with inappropriate footwear and fighting crime. This is my version of the character.

Recipe:

* GI Joe Resolute Flint (heavily modified, for the entire body sans head and feet)
* GI Joe Rise Of Cobra Baroness (for the feet)
* Playmates Star Trek Checkov (modified, for the head)
* GI Joe Resolute Scarlett (for the crossbow)
* some material
* some modelling clay
* some paint (Citadel "Chaos Black", "Skull White", "Elf Flesh", "Mithril Silver", "Blood Red")

Given that I seem to have much more male fodder than female, yet I tend to make more female characters than male, I thought that I would continue to experiment in "gender reassignment surgery" for 3.75" figures. The combination of Flint, Checkov and a rotary tool I think has come out pretty well:

The hairstyle didn't come out as I had originally planned, but still works in the context of the character. Huntress perhaps is a little too buxom in this incarnation, but I am explaining it away that she is wearing a particularly tight corset.

Huntress' cleavage is as much a weapon as her trusty crossbow:

Born into a wealthy mining family in the Wroonian colony on Saleucami, Arlan Candroon had the galaxy at his feet.

A particularly bright child, Arlan studied with the greatest minds of the Old Republic, excelling in the arts and having a particular passion for playing the Dorenian Beshniquel. As a gift for excelling in a music competition for students from the Inner Rim, Arlan received a gold plated cortosis chain, which he wore proudly as a belt.

sdsc_0271.jpg

Unfortunately, as most teens do, Arlan rebelled against his family and mentors and fell in with a gang of pirates. Donning the fashion of the day along with a powerful sidearm and sharp knife, Arlan became a smuggler for hire. He did however keep the cortosis chain as part of his couture which proved to come in very handy when he had an unfortunate run-in with a Sith Lord.

Losing his right arm and suffering numerous deep cuts across his face and torso changed Arlan's outlook on life in the Old Republic. Fitted with a prosthesis, Arlan retired from smuggling to become an honest merchant ship's captain, based out of Dantooine.

Having not played The Old Republic game but being very interested in the challenge of making a set of three figures, I took the "evolutions" part of the Joint Site Tribute brief to its extreme showing how one character evolved from a child, through a rebellious teen to a reserved old man. The three figures took around fifteen hours to complete from start to finish once I had the basic idea of what I was going to work upon. The name was a result of using the Star Wars Random Name Generator.

Here is a Tintinna (Tin Tin Dwarf) for my entry into Yakfinities 43. Squeak is a Tintinna who is mentioned in the Radio Drama and who may or may not have been in the Holiday Special. Given the lack of reference pictures, I had to elaborate on the full body and costume:

Tintinna.jpg

Recipe:

* AustWide Toys Destroyer Series Zombie (for the chest)
* AustWide Toys Destroyer Series Demon (for the tail, upper arms and legs)
* Big W Creature World Bear (for the head)
* OTC Feltipern Trevagg (for the forearms and hands)
* Legacy Collection Princess Leia (for the Force Pike and glass)
* Dragonball Evolution Bulma (for the guns)
* some modelling clay
* some material
* some paint (Citadel "Scorched Brown", "Bestial Brown", "Kommando Khaki", "Chaos Black", "Mithril Silver")

I probably should have added a bit of bulk to the cheeks and opened the mouth to closer match the scant few reference pictures that I could find, but given the incredibly small possibility that Hasbro will ever visit the species, it isn't like there will be an official figure to compare this particular one to.

Never stand in the way of a Tintinna and their drink.

For my third 12" scale figure, I thought that I would try my second Batgirl, this time Betty Kane, the Bat-Girl from the early Silver Age:

tumblr_lpg2l0OrNt1qdep0so1_400.jpg

Recipe:

* Hayden Liv Doll
* Barbie Fashionista head and heels
* some modelling clay (to bulk up the chest a little)
* some foam (for the mask)
* some material
* some paint (Citadel "Elf Flesh", "Skull White", "Chaos Black", "Ultramarines Blue", "Red Gore")

As with the Stephanie Brown Batgirl that I did previously, there were certainly occasions where I asked myself why I was subjecting myself to the pain of putting the costume together. "But it is a simple costume", I hear you say. Indeed it is, but making 1:6 scale stockings (which probably aren't even noticable in these pictures) is a right pain in the proverbial - the stockings ended up taking about twice as long to complete as making the rest of the outfit and doing a minor repaint on the face put together! Still, I'm glad that the finished product came out as nicely as it did. I wonder whether I should keep going and make all of the other Batgirls?

Batman may be "The (K)Night", but Bat-Girl may well be "The Christmas Eve".
