Agreed, there were a lot of inspired entries this month.
I think Owen's "digital camo" battle droid is my pick for the most impressive paint. I'm struggling to improve my own abilities, that pattern is a real "dare to dream!" standard.
I really like Chewie's beetle droid design. I think if a droid is going to be non-humanoid, still basing it off, at least in some remote concept, something else living gives the design a certain authenticity.
Johnboy Walton's does a nice job of showing a humanoid droid created by non-humans. It only makes since that a droid created by Kel Dors would have features remotely similar to the species that made it.
Hawkeye's submission is one of those customs that makes me want a figure that I had no interest in while it was on the shelves. His paintjob and accessories show the potential in what I originally thought was an uninteresting sculpt.
4U-KJ by Jordan is a neat tie in to the R2-KT , and certainly an original design. The translucent plastic works great for a "decloaking" mode. Though, it makes me want to see one painted fully visible!
IG88's is a great combo of quirky and creepy. For some reason the mouse droid with the gun popping up has a comical look to me, but the concept behind it would be nothing to laugh at for the empire.
While I'm not a big fan of generic battle droids, I have to admit Sambuca's accessorizing is simple but effective. The misslepack works great as a jetpack.
HorseHead's is another design that is a little quirky, but still a neat design.
Scribble's is a great conversion. I've got to say the design for some reason doesn't really look very "Star Wars-ish" to me, but everyone's got a different opinion on what does. The paint job is great, and the action shot shows how intimidating these things could be on the battlefield.
Paul's winning entry is a great. It's an excellent example of kitbashing odds and ends together without the outcome looking like it was just thrown together. The paint job pulls the whole things together, and it's a very convincing non-humanoid, or even animal-based droid.
Fritzkrieg's Mangler Droids are wicked. They really look like something that would have popped up in the clone wars cartoon. I'm still trying to figure out what the dome is from.
Darth Kikinou's is certainly a formidable design. I had a hard time figuring out how large it was until I recognized the torso. I think a custom paint job would really bring out the potential of the design.
Ars30 takes an oversized figure and makes it believably in scale, even though it towers over a Wookiee. I think if the figure was any bulkier, it would just look like it belonged in another toy line, but as is it's an interesting design to incorporate into a smaller scaled universe.
Smarty's is another design that works, regardless of its simplicity. It's another one where I think a new paint job would really show off the design.
Congrats to our winner, and good job to everyone. It really is inspiring to see what everyone comes up with each month. These contests are really helping me get back into a hobby I had only ever dabbled with before, and makes a great excuse to use up all those parts I've been collecting over the years!
